About the Department

Student Housing and Residential Life (SHRL) is a large department within California State University, Northridge (CSUN) serving the university community consisting of 44 acres of grounds and approximately 1,100,000 square feet of facilities space in 34 buildings that house 3,200 single students and 120 students/staff with families. Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Director of Student Housing and Residential Life, the Associate Director for Housing Facility Operations oversees all activities of the Student Housing Facility Operations unit, including maintenance, custodial, and grounds functions. This position directly supervises two full-time employees and indirectly oversees 45 full-time employees and a varying number of seasonal staff. The associate director manages a $4.6 million annual operating budget and oversees the student housing long-range major maintenance program with a budget of $7 - 10 million per year. The unit maintains 44 acres of grounds and approximately 1.1 million square feet of facilities space in 34 buildings which house 3,200 single students and 120 students and staff with families.

 

The Associate Director serves as a critical member of the Student Housing and Residential Life management team; collaborates with the director to develop and implement a long-range plan that anticipates and responds to facilities needs; collaborates with the Residential Computing Resources team to develop technology solutions for facilities operations functions; and serves as the departmental lead on a wide variety of major maintenance projects. The associate director serves as a member of the Student Housing emergency team and works closely and collaboratively with various campus departments, notably Physical Plant Management, Facilities Planning, and Purchasing.

 

Qualifications

Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree. Equivalent to five years of progressively responsible professional experience, preferably in facilities management. Managerial role in two of the five years is preferred as well as experience working in an union environment.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Strong management and leadership skills and ability to develop high functioning teams using a variety of leadership approaches. Thorough knowledge of facilities operations. Knowledge and understanding of planning, scheduling, and coordinating work in a fast paced facilities management environment as well as general understanding of custodial, grounds, and building maintenance operations including but not limited to: plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, painting and locksmith. Knowledge and understanding of current technologies and information systems and potential applications to work problems, particularly as they relate to facilities management. General knowledge of developing, managing, and operating major maintenance budgets. Knowledge of construction administration methods, practices and procedures. Specialized skills and ability to: possess strong supervisory skills; possess a general understanding of building maintenance trades and custodial and grounds operations; lead and effectively manage teams; effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse, multicultural environment; maintain positive collaborative relationship with union leadership and represented employees; maintain appropriate financial records; interpret technical procedures or regulations; effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, colleagues, customers, and the general public; write reports, business correspondences, and procedure manuals. Must have strong computer skills and be competent in Microsoft Office applications.
