COMPANY BACKGROUND/CULTURE

Our client is a rapidly growing and highly acclaimed multifamily property management company founded in 2001. They are a proven real estate industry leader specializing in the acquisition, development, and management of multifamily apartment and townhome complexes equipped with exceptional amenities. Based in Indianapolis, Indiana, our client currently owns and manages over 20 multifamily communities throughout Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky. Well-known for its knowledgeable and skilled team of real estate professionals possessing more than 100 years of combined industry-specific experience; and has received numerous accolades from top real estate and multifamily professional organizations and associations.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Controller will be responsible for all aspects of the Company’s accounting and financial reporting functions, including the development, implementation and oversight of accounting policies and controls consistent with US GAAP. S/he will help guide financial decisions by providing meaningful financial reporting and insightful analysis. Additionally, the Controller will recommend and implement appropriate improvements to internal accounting and business processes and systems to ensure that practices are scalable and in line with the overall goals of the organization.
The Controller will demonstrate a high level of executive presence, confidence and the ability to build credibility and influence others through a “roll up your sleeves” work approach. S/he will be responsible for building, developing and coaching a high performing team and will act as a strong collaborative partner across the organization.
Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Ensure the department provides accurate and timely financial reporting to owners, lenders and management:
    • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual corporate results to executive leadership.
    • Establish and communicate financial metrics and key performance indicators to senior management.
    • Monitor corporate cash positions on a daily basis. Compile relevant management financial reports that provide dashboard indicators of company cash flow status.
    • Performs monthly review of financial statements for all entities and assists in preparation of corporate tax returns, coordinate efforts with outside CPA.
    • Protects assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls. Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits, providing information to external auditors.
    • Oversee all accounting activities including performing A/R reviews and supervise accounting staff during all bank reconciliations.
    • Provides accounting support for properties including performing Yardi ledger corrections, transfers, and difficult move-outs or handling random ledger exceptions.
    • Assess the financial infrastructure, identifying priorities to update, improve or optimize processes, systems and controls for increased efficiency and effectiveness.
    • Conducts all business in accordance with company policies and procedures, Fair Housing, Fair Credit Reporting Act, and all other applicable laws.
  • Provide robust cross-departmental transaction support and partnership:
      • Build strong relationships with cross department leaders to ensure strong communication and best in class support.
      • Provide transaction support including due diligence, integration planning and post-close activities to assure that accounting considerations are understood and planned for.
      • Responsible for evaluating real estate market trends that impact the business and preparing analysis and evaluation including compiling market data and analyzing comparisons.
        Assists in preparing budgets and forecasts. Monitors and investigates budget variances.
      • Participate in the development of and support the company’s strategic plans.
  •  Department Leadership
    • Build a strong bench by hiring, training, managing and motivating staff into high performing teams.
    • Set clear vision and expectations for the team; leverage strengths of the individual team members and clarify roles and responsibilities where needed.
    • Assess staffing models to ensure the department structure continually meets the Company’s objectives.
    • Mentor, support and coach – lead by example.
    • Continually focus on training and development programs for the team to cultivate “best” and “brightest” talent within the industry.
    • Keep up-to-date on current HR trends.

YEAR ONE CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS

  • Learn the business and culture thereby establishing credibility with the executive management team, external auditors, peers, and direct reports. Personify an enthusiastic, positive attitude and desire to contribute to the success of the organization.
  • Viewed as the technical subject matter expert and ‘go-to’ resource for all matters related to accounting, financial reporting, and controls.
  • Evaluate current accounting and reporting processes, controls, and systems and make recommendations to automate and streamline processes where applicable.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

The Controller will be an experienced financial executive who works well in an entrepreneurial and collaborative environment. S/he will possess a minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting leadership experience, including proven managerial experience. Experience within real estate management or development is required; multi-family experience highly beneficial. Previous experience working within a founder owned and managed environment also highly beneficial. The position requires a growth-oriented individual with demonstrated accounting and leadership skills.

Ideal candidates will have experience in the following areas:

  • Technical experience will cover the range of financial reporting, accounting policy, controls, financial systems, and audit.
  • A proven track record of instilling core finance processes and controls with a focus on systems and automation.
  • Superior analytical skills, logical in problem solving and focused on continuous improvement with high attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
  • Demonstrated people management and leadership with the ability to coach, train and mentor staff while motivating team performance.
  • A demonstrated commitment to recruiting, training, and retaining a diverse team.
  • Vision, strategic planning, and project management abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills; experience owning key business relationships for an organization.
  • Strong cross-functional leadership experience; the ability to influence and drive change.
  • Responsiveness – encourage innovation; work to improve processes and systems.
  • Technical Acumen: Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.  Knowledge of Yardi a plus.
  • Experience in researching and documenting technical accounting issues.
  • Strong ability to build consensus among diverse parties.
  • Knowledge of best practice internal controls procedures.
  • Highest level of professionalism and integrity.
  • Exceptional verbal/written communication skills, with the ability to interact well with all levels within the Company.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelors in Finance, Accounting, Economics or related field. An advanced degree is preferred.
  • CPA considered an asset.
