Description

Position Description

The Tulane University School of Architecture seeks qualified candidates in Real Estate Development at the rank of Professor of Practice. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2023.

The Real Estate Development program is seeking applications from candidates in the fields of real estate development, urban planning and/or the building sciences, among other fields. Candidates should have earned a Ph.D. (or D.Des) by the start date of the appointment. Candidates with significant professional experience and who possess a terminal or professional degree in a field that is allied to the built environment will also be considered.

Professors of Practice are vital non-tenure eligible full-time faculty who balance teaching, research and service obligations—with a primary focus on teaching. However, professors of practice are encouraged and supported to advance their research portfolios. This support includes a teaching and service load that is commensurate with tenure-track faculty. Professors of Practice generally operate on five-year contracts that may be extended to long-term contracts following a periodical faculty review process. There are no time limits for Professors of Practice at Tulane and many long-standing faculty have served for several decades in these ranks. Professors of Practice are a critical element to the full-time faculty governance and culture of the school and the institution. For this search, we seek applications for equivalent candidates at the assistant, associate and full professor of practice ranks.

Qualifications

This search is looking for one or more faculty members who focus on real estate and urban development and/or sustainable design and construction.

The program seeks to hire one or more faculty members who can teach real estate finance and/or urban economics courses, primarily but not exclusively at the graduate level. It is not necessary that a candidate focuses on real estate finance or urban economics in their core research portfolio— as such, one need not necessarily be an economist. Candidates who specialize in other areas of urban research but incorporate methods and theories from economics, economic geography and/or real estate are encouraged to apply. The program seeks applications from scholars who can competently teach introductory courses in real estate finance, urban economics, real estate development, proforma modeling, and/or housing policy and finance. Candidates with practical professional experience are encouraged to apply.

The program also seeks to hire one or more faculty members who can teach building science-related courses with a focus on sustainable design and construction. For this position, we welcome candidates with a Ph.D. or D.Des. in building science, construction management, civil or architectural engineering, real estate development, urban design and/or architectural science. Potential introductory and advanced courses include sustainable building systems, construction

and project management, energy and buildings, and sustainable real estate. Candidates should have a robust background in not only how buildings are designed but also how they are constructed and managed.

The specialized research areas for the real estate faculty include climate change (sustainability and adaptation science) and community and affordable housing development. However, the program welcomes faculty candidates who advance a wide array of research inquiries inside and outside of these research concentrations. The program in real estate is home to 300 undergraduate students (Bachelor of Science in Real Estate (B.S.R.E.) and 20 graduate students (Masters of Sustainable Real Estate Development (M.S.R.E.D)). Faculty are expected to support advising and service responsibilities consistent with all appointed full-time faculty. The real estate program is particularly interested in developing career-centered curricular modules that help students transition into the real estate job market. Professors of Practice serve on the same committees and governance bodies as do tenured and tenure-track faculty. The program in real estate includes a handful of full-time faculty members and a select group of part-time lecturers and adjuncts. Professors of Practice are expected to mentor and support junior and part-time faculty in advance of curricular excellence.
