Senior Planner

Planning Department

Hiring Range:  $51,083 - $60,120

Deadline:  5pm January 10, 2019

Chesterfield County’s Planning Department is seeking a Senior Planner to, under general direction, manage projects in support of the county's Comprehensive Plan, including plan amendments, zoning ordinance amendments, research and analysis, reports, presentations, and land use review and case management.  Establish and maintain contacts with citizens, staff and officials with effective working relationships in support of planning projects.  Conduct effective presentations regarding the comprehensive plan and related topics to staff, officials and citizens.  Perform other work as required.  Ideal candidates will be skilled in understanding the "big picture", be self-starters, creative, and visionary in solving community issues and approaches to community engagement. Possess a bachelor's degree in planning, economics, environment, sociology or related field (master's degree and AICP certification preferred) along with at least two years of experience in areas such as project management, land development, zoning ordinance amendments; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Ability to work independently and as part of a team; strong written and verbal communication skills; management of multiple projects; and ability to form effective working relationships with citizens, officials, staff, departments and agencies.  Ability to conduct research and analysis, including use of geographic information systems (GIS) and understanding of census and demographics.  Knowledge of planning and land use principles, laws and zoning ordinances.  Extensive experience with use of personal computers and Microsoft Office 365 software programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Share Point.  Position involves field work and before and after-hours meetings.  Knowledge of infographic and SketchUp software and skills preferred.  Good driving record required.  Must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months.  Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.  A Chesterfield County application is required and must be submitted online by deadline.  Visit careers.chesterfield.gov to view instructions and to complete and submit an application.  (804) 748-1551.
